Michael G. Romey is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Latham & Watkins, LLP, and is the former global chair of the Environmental Litigation Practice and former co-chair of the Product Liability, Mass Torts & Consumer Class Actions Practice at the firm. He is a member of the firm’s Environment, Land & Resources Department. Romey has a broad range of litigation experience, with an emphasis on environmental litigation. He has represented clients in toxic tort, "Superfund," cost recovery, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Proposition 65, climate change and insurance coverage litigations.
 
Romey has developed significant experience in numerous areas of environmental compliance, enforcement and regulation. He represents clients before federal, state and local environmental agencies. He also counsels clients on the regulatory and liability risks associated with climate change and the legal reactions to it.
 
He holds a JD from the University of California, Berkeley and a BA from Columbia University.

Franita Tolson was interviewed about how federal lawsuits from North Carolina, Alabama, and Arkansas test the limits of the Voting Rights Act, the boundaries of state government authority, and the ability of voting rights groups to file racial gerrymandering cases. “These doctrines and approaches in these cases fundamentally reset the rules of the game,” she said. “In 2030 we will live in a completely different world than we lived in in 2020, and 2020 was not favorable to minority voters at all.”
