The money will pay for mentors, tutors and other forms of intervention. Reese was frustrated by the recidivism of young men he saw in his courtroom as a Los Angeles judge. When he read that some state officials study the reading scores of inner-city boys to know how many prison cells to build, he was moved to improve literacy in L.A. "Too many young black men, not much different from me, don't have a fair chance to achieve," he said.

It was reported that the USC Gould School's Intellectual Property and Technology Law Clinic is helping documentary filmmakers earn an exemption from the digital locks used by broadcasters and Hollywood studios, which have been criticized for interfering with the fair use of copyrighted material. In 2009, the clinic helped win a temporary exemption from the digital locks law, which is about to expire; it is seeking to extend the exemption to all filmmakers and the authors of e-books. Jack Lerner of the Gould School said that the clinic faces a few challenges in extending the exemption, including the fact that technical protection measures like the digital locks appear on discs, cable, satellite and online media.
