Remembering 9/11
USC Law community will join the university on Wednesday in a "Day of Remembrance" to mark the first-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. Various events have been scheduled around campus, including at USC Law, to offer opportunities for reflection, meditation and prayer.
Between 5:30 and 6:15 a.m., an early morning program on McCarthy Quad (between Leavey and Doheny Libraries) will mark the moments when airliners hijacked by terrorists slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. The program will offer readings, reflections and bells, followed by a moment of silence. Coffee and bagels also will be provided for participants.
From noon until 1:15 p.m, a convocation will take place on McCarthy Quad with a silent remembrance and poetry read by USC faculty members Carol Muske and James Ragan. USC President Steven Sample and University Professor Kevin Starr will offer words of reflection. Performances will include "Wake Up Call" by USC theater students, a multi-faith choral reading and music by the Thorton School.
At the Law School, the Student Bar Association has planned several events to mark the one-year anniversary of Sept. 11. The SBA has asked professors to begin classes on Wednesday with a moment of silence to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks. Also scheduled is a discussion from 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Room 130 with professors Niels Frenzen and Ron Garet, who will offer thoughts on the events of Sept. 11 and their aftermath. Refreshments and drinks will be served.
Throughout the day, television monitors in the student and Campbell lounges will show coverage of observances around the country, and a Sept. 11 exhibit will be displayed in the lobby.
