Conference Registration Fee

There is a conference registration fee of $50.00. This fee covers all conference activities including meals (continental breakfast and lunch, but not dinner), receptions and refreshments. Click here to register. In addition to paying the registration fee, those attending the conference must join the Society for Empirical Legal Studies. See below for information about joining the society.

Membership in the Society for Empirical Legal Studies

Everyone attending the conference must be a member of the Society for Empirical Legal Studies (SELS). SELS membership is available to anyone by payment of dues in the amount of $60.00 ($25 or $35 for students). To become a member, please click here. Membership in SELS includes a subscription to the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, with electronic access to all available content as long as membership is maintained.

Friday Dinner

Participants are encouraged to arrange their own dinners. Attendees can choose among the numerous restaurants across Los Angeles and nearby cities. Dinner groups can also be arranged on request. For those who wish to stay closer to the conference, there will also be a catered dinner at the Gould School of Law on Friday evening. This dinner will cost $75. If you would like to sign up fo the dinner, click here.

Travel/Lodging Expenses

As a general matter the conference organizers are not able to reimburse expenses. However, we currently expect to be able to offer financial support to some out-of-town paper presenters who (a) certify to us that their home institution does not reimburse paper presenters (and does not permit reimbursement from faculty research accounts), and (b) attend the whole conference. For such paper presenters we anticipate being able to reimburse for expenses (not otherwise reimbursed), up to the following: (a) $1,000 for participants from countries other than the U.S. and Canada; (b) $800 for participants from more than 300 miles from Los Angeles; and (c) $500 for participants from less than 300 miles from Los Angeles.

Persons who anticipate needing financial assistance should apply no later than July 15 by e-mailing cels2009@law.usc.edu. In this e-mail, applicants should affirm their intention to attend the whole conference and certify that their home institution will not reimburse them.

We can only reimburse the person presenting the paper and then only one person per paper.

To be assured of obtaining the reduced conference rate it is advisable to book your room early. Further information on accommodations is included under "Hotels".
